Cottonwood Elementary Policies
2021-2022
Attendance and Absences
Regular attendance is essential to academic success which ensures concepts and skills are consistently learned. According to Utah Compulsory Attendance Laws, every school age child must arrive on time and attend school regularly. Parents are responsible for their children’s regular school attendance. Federal Law states that all schools must have 95% attendance of all children – NO EXCEPTIONS. We encourage regular attendance unless your child is ill. “Make-up” work will never replace the learning experience missed when your child is absent. Granite School District has an Attendance Policy. It states:
1. Bring a doctor’s note for appointments to be medically excused.
2. After five (5) or more days of unexcused absences (medical is the only officially excused absence) within a school year, the school will mail the parents a Truancy Letter asking for the parent’s help with their child’s attendance and warning of consequences for further truancy.
3. After ten (10) days of unexcused absences within a school year, the school will mail the parents a Habitual Truancy Notice/Pre-Court Hearing. The Habitual Truancy Notice requires the student and parent(s) to appear at a Pre-Court hearing. A $48.00 truancy fine may be assessed at this time.
4. After 15 or more days of unexcused absences within a school year, parents will be mailed a Habitual Truancy Notice. Elementary students may be referred to the Salt Lake County District Attorney.
If your child is absent, please call the office (385-646-4798) with the reason for absence. When your child returns to school send a signed note to the office stating the reason for the absence. It is the responsibility of the parent to arrange with the teacher make- up/missed class work. Parents may contact teachers by e-mail. Please do
not interrupt teachers during instructional time or just before/after the bell rings.
If you plan on being out of town on vacation, please inform the teacher(s) a reasonable time in advance (at least 3 days). Vacation and parent-excused days are subject to the above Granite School District Attendance Policy. Please visit with the teacher(s) upon arrival back to school to make arrangements for missed schoolwork. Parents are responsible for covering concepts missed during the absence.
If your child arrives after the tardy bell, he/she should check in at the office, fill out a tardy slip, and take the slip to the teacher. Tardies are subject to the Granite School District Attendance Policy. When students are late for school, they lose valuable instruction time, interrupt the learning of others, and may miss important instruction. Students must attend 4/7 of the school day to be counted as attending. Students who arrive after 11:30 am on a full school day will not be counted as attending a school day, according to Utah State law.
Supervision before and after school- It is recommended that students arrive at school no sooner than 8:25 a.m. At the first bell, students should quickly line up at their grade level doors. If there is a problem, students should come to the office and report concerns immediately. In case of severe or rainy weather, students can go into the gym until the first bell rings.
Access Control System for Student Safety – To enhance safety for students and employees, the Granite School District Board of Education as provided electronic access control systems for all elementary schools, and other selected sites in the district. The only public access will be through the front office doors. Every visitor will be required to check in at the office, with a valid Utah ID – Driver’s License, and be screened for access into the building.
